Pixels & Popcorn

Microsite

Interactive

Responsive

A website promoting a small-scale event that allows people to make reservations and custom requests prior to arrival. The site includes a search-and-find minigame to enhance the event's playful theme.

Overview

Pixels & Popcorn is a semi-private end-of-semester celebration that occurred in Spring of 2024. The event includes an assortment of Nintendo games, Chinese food from local restaurants, and a movie with popcorn to finish the night.

Objective

Promoting an event, no matter how small or private, should generate excitement for the attendees. This website communicates the playful tone of the event through its bright colors and use of a search and find minigame.

Design Process

Name & Identity

The project began with creating a name for the event. I chose the name Pixels & Popcorn as an alliterative way to align with the theme. Pixels relates with the game side of the event, and Popcorn refers to the popcorn movie half.

Juniper Std was chosen as the display typeface due to its calligraphic appearance. I felt the font related to the flowing, handwritten design of Chinese characters. I used Source Code Pro for the body copy and headers as its low contrast and angular shape reflected the video game competition.

Key Takeaways

  • During this project, I learned how to create a minigame that returns messages through a randomize function.
  • A digital invitation can have interactivity and still be simple.
